Develop a New Digital Textbook

The Press maintains a large library of digital books that can be selectively used or reconfigured to create a custom volume for the classroom. But the Press also can help educators develop an entirely new book leveraging groundbreaking technology, specifically suited to pedagogical needs. The general process follows:

1 - Reach Out

Contact the Press and share basic details and ideas for the digital textbookbook. When is it needed? How much existing work is already complete (e.g., is there a chapter outline and are authors already lined up?). How many and what type of interactive modules do you want to build for it? What is the estimated number of students who will be using the eTextbook each year (at your school and others)? These requirements will help the Press develop a project plan and estimate a price for the digital textbook.

2 - Identify an Editor

Identify the expert who will be the author or editor for the project. The author or editor will sign a publishing agreement with the Press and will be the primary project manager for the digital textbook. Refer to our guidelines to see information that is useful to volume editors.

3 - Plan & Develop

The author or editor and Press staff will work closely together to develop the digital textbook using the Press’ revolutionary and sophisticated platform. Text, endnotes, images, audio, videos, assessments, and all other interactive assets are assembled into the builder to create the interactive text. The process remains iterative to ensure the highest quality digital textbook is developed. Depending on their level of comfort, authors/editors will be able to enter and adjust content directly in the builder, while Press personnel handle the more technical elements of digital textbook creation.

4 - Quality Control & Testing

Throughout the development, and specifically prior to publication, the Press and author/editor will review the digital text to ensure that the design and functionality of the text are exactly as anticipated.

5 - Launch and Use

The digital textbook will be available in the Press’ online store and ready to use. Teachers can send students a direct link to the book in the store or distribute an informational PDF to them (also with a direct link to the book in the store) that provides basic info on the book, features, and FAQs.

6 - Update

Want to make changes to a digital textbook that’s already published? Want to add a chapter? Update content for current events? Or adjust content that students are having trouble with? It’s no problem with the Press’ digital platform. Changes can be made to digital textbooks almost instantaneously.
